Insider: The 13th man is for real
November 11, 2009
When Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel was asked for his favourite memory of the 2008 season, he didn’t choose any of the highlights from the Grey Cup victory over the Alouettes at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium but instead recalled a moment from the week before.
“I’ll never forget the atmosphere that I experienced at McMahon Stadium during the West Final (against the BC Lions),” said Hufnagel. “The crowd’s energy and noise lifted our team and disrupted our opponent, helping us win that game and earn a spot in the Grey Cup.”
“Last year, the fans created such emotion and energy,” said quarterback Henry Burris. “To me, that was the most electric crowd I’ve played in front of here at McMahon Stadium.”
Heading into the contest, Stamps fans — especially the diehards at the GoStampsGo forum — were challenging each other to wear red and to be loud and proud during the game. The Calgary players joined in.
“I know people say we don't win playoff games and those same people also say our stadium isn't a loud stadium to play in,” said Nik Lewis prior to the contest. “Well, as a player we have something to prove, and as fans you have something to prove. The best thing is that we have the chance to prove it at the same time.”
Both sides delivered on their end of the bargain in 2008 and the Stamps are counting on more of that home-field advantage this Sunday when they will entertain the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Semi-Final.
Once again, the appeal has been made for the crowd to pitch in and help when it matters most — when the Stamps defence is on the field and they need the help of the 13th man to disrupt the opposing offence.
