Sounds like she has a powerful group backing her (controlling the political strings perhaps?).. What's the motivation of her backers I wonder? I'd like to know her political affiliation with just what political party... & you know she has one. Perhaps if she wins this is a prelude to running for Premier just like Klein???
She must truly believe she can win quitting her job at CTV.
We'll see how she aligns herself in the coming weeks.
Didn't hear her presser but I want a person as mayor who knows & understands the issues. McIver is a fiscal hawk & looks like he can run the city. Her running won't change how I vote.
McIver is all about McIver.
He has been positioning himself for the Big Chair for a long time. Higgins will win with a land slide victory and McIver will be out for good. McIver has the charisma of a road apple, you can white wash it but it is stilla road apple. Barb is well respected throughout the country and will assist Calgary and the entire Province stabalize and recover from the Stelmach PC's incompetence. Put a vBookie bet on the mayors race and I will bet everything I have on Barb.
Besides I live in Strathmore so it does not really matter to me who gets in because it will not effect me one way or the other (our council here is ....!)

Not sure why 'charisma' is a defining characterstic youd like to see in a mayor?
Barb is well respected as a journalist but I have yet to see anything about why she is capable of running a multimillion dollar corporations ....
She's got an advantage being in peoples homes (tv) for years but what's she know about running a city?? What's her views?? her policies?? her plans if she wins??
Unless I hear waht her plans and policies are to address the key issues that plague this city, more so the current city council, she won't get my vote just like any other mayoral candidate.

I don't care about charisma. For a mayor, I don't think it's needed. Look at Al Duerr. How much charisma did he have yet he kept winning for a decade.
There was a Letter To The Editor in today's Herald saying Barb seems like a nice person but what makes her think she can (as a rookie with no political experience) lead a city council in a city with nearly 1.1 million people?? The suggestion in the letter is bang on. Higgins wants to get into civic politics, that's great. But she needs to get some experience as an alderman first. I totally agree.

Have you seen some of the projects coming out of city hall lately?
I think Barb would be good because she has 0 political experience. The last thing I want as either a mayor or an alderman is a "stay the course, spend like crazy" politician like we've had lately.

McIver's not that kind of politician. We need more Ric McIver's & a lot less Druh Farrell's. Who, I'm sure is looking forward to closing down Memorial Drive again for a lame celebration.

I liked McIvor until he announced he would run for Mayor. All of a sudden is No unnecessary spending became lets by as many votes as possible. When he was just anti spending I liked him but this past 6 months his voting pattern has changed.
I also don't understand how being an Alderman makes you qualified to run a corporation. All Alderman do is ask the administration to study this or prepare a report on this. Then when the budget comes around they have no clue whats in it. The only kind of experience that in my opinion qualifies someone to be mayor would be large buisness high level management and working in City Planning. Other than that its all fluff that people like to trot out there to impress people
At least with Higgens you can say she has 20 years of community relations and should be in touch with what the real issues are to Calgarians. I think that is a start that will help with Transit, Policing, and Boondoggle projects.
Right now I am in the ABM (anyone but McIvor) camp but the guy I would really like to see win who has no chance is Nenshi. If you want to talk about real experience for running a city he is the only candidate who has it. He also is the only candidate to release a real platform. He does want to spend a little more than I like but his targets for that spending I agree with.
The sad thing about all of this is; less than 20% of the people will vote and the one that is "most shiny" will most likely win. With that you probably won't hear anything concrete from here than platitudes (make a stronger city, be more accountable, provide responsible government) from the name recognition candidates.

Unfortunate, but true.
Then again, if Bronco had decided to stay on for another possible term I would suspect that % would be much, much higher.

True as the Alderman/Mayor don't actually run a corporation anyway....that's what they have the City Manager for. It's just as important, if not more than any Alderman, as the work (or bureaucracy, depending upon how you "look" at things) is generally handled by the CM.
Being Mayor of Calgary should stand for more than just saying no. This City needs a committed person, & I wonder if McIvor has another short term goal in mind.
Barb is an intelligent woman, who represents Fresh Blood. She just needs to play her cards right. Whereas, McIvor really should have joined the Provincial Tory Backbenches years ago. He's a less versatile version of Richard Magnus.
But really, a Stampeder Fan should be running this city That's the most common sense thing to do.

Time to wake up voters.
The mayor has no power the power is with the city Manager who decides everything the Mayor and Council are just window dressing.
