This is absolutely great news! He would be a tremendous addition. We'd have all year to negotiate a long term contract extention with him. Awesome!
That said, he still could get picked up. However, most guys in this situation wind up back in the CFL.

Now now don't get too excited. Breathe. Ten more days, just ten more days, then we can all prematurely celebrate our Grey Cup victory.

Yeah, but suppose he wants to try the NFL again next year? Are we going to go through this every season until he 'sticks' down south?
Our present O-line isn't that bad. Sure, we can always improve at that right guard or tackle position. How much better would he really make the offence (would it be night and day?) and are we willing to dish out huge coin for Tsoumpas for a long term contract?
These...are the questions.

I think I disagree...kinda. I think we have non-import talent, it's just pretty raw and needs to develop. So being able, at this time, to manage their development instead of throwing them into the fire can't but help!

The only bad game our o-line has had was the TO game. So for right now, the OL is actually not bad...
BUT...Tsoumpas has age on his side compared to a few guys (Myddleton not included, but Comiskey is getting up there) and we could use the Canuck depth (no backup on the chart behind Comiskey).
My prediction if Tsoumpas comes back, Myddleton gets relegated to backup this year (not because of poor play, but Tsoumpas is a beast, and Comiskey is our vet on OL) then next year if Comiskey leaves, Myddleton moves to LG.

Tsoumpas is one of the few players on our team that I'd be willing to open up the vault for. After the starting QB, all star non-imports are your most valuable players.

This would be huge for the stamps...but I'd be surprised if he doesn't catch on with another NFL team

At this time for a Canadian Olineman to catch with another team would be surprising. The teams down there are pretty well set with their oline going into camp by now. The point is why take a guy that did not make it to main camp when you can wait for one that has.

I honestly think that players like Tsoumpas take their shot in the NFL, and when it doesnt work out the first or second time, decide that it is better to be loved as an all-star in the cfl than sit on the bench in obscurity in the NFL. So they pick the best place to live in Canada and play there. And no one can argue that Calgary is the best place to live and play in Canada

If Tsoumpas is smart he'll do what you just explained.
I wish a ton more good NFL 3rd or 4th string QBs would be willing to come up sooner than guys like Cleon Lemon. Lemon has atheticism but its obvious he wasted away while sitting on taxi squads, practice rosters, scout teams, etc. His edge, at 29 or 30 has eroded while he inhaled a fat NFL salary cheque.
Finally, when the NFL finally expelled him he was only 29 and thought he could play. His skillset is obvious of a thoroughbred but a racehorse thats been in the barn for 6 or 7 years and hasn't raced. The CFL just needs to recruit one or two young NFL type QBs a year while these guys are still 23 to 25, not 29 to 32.
A guy who's a star at 23 can play up north for 3 to 5 years at $250,000 to $500,000 a year and if he's Flutie, Garcia, Dunigan, Dickenson, Moon type status he'll have a $5million dollar offer waiting for him down south before he's 30. Maybe even by 27 - and then he's got 3 or 4 or more years where he competed in tough CFL games, faced defenses, tossed hundreds of passes a year, completed passes, developed team chemistry and leadership, etc.
If the NFL was smart they'd fund a good portion of a young QB's salary to get real game experience up north (maybe up to $200,000 a season, chump change for the NFL)

If he wants to try again next year it would mean that he plays out his option and is a FA which means we lose his CFL playing rights. Definately a potential downside to dumping the NFL window in an option year. On the plus side, he got released pretty early by the Fins which may sour him on trying out for the NFL again...

The cap implications on guys coming back is interesting. Did the stamps plan on his return? Would they use there injury money that they set aside.
My opinion is you sign him regardless of the cap implications and pay the fine at the end of the year rather than lose him.
If he does return it is a pretty big mid season upgrade with Rambo coming back and Tsoumps coming back. They would definately go on paper to a top team from a mid level team.
