Dude, that's a long drawn out argument that has been beaten to death. We all know why there is a pretty good contingent of Rider fans at the game.

Because a lot of them live in Calgary, yes I get that. My point was that if there were more season tickets sold, say 35,000, there would be much less game day tickets available for Rider fans - regardless of where they reside.

It's not rider fans who are the problem (considering a fair number of Stamps Season ticket holders are also Rider Fans).

It's the Priders who are the problem, not the season ticket numbers.

The marketplace in Calgary is just too competitive to have 35,000 season ticket holders.

Up to 1981 this was a CFL town. It's not anymore, there's core set of fans who live and die Stamps football.

It's a simplistic view (sorry) that just because there's more people the entertainment dollar remains the same per person for the CFL extract from.

As more people are added (for Calgary, at least up to last year it was folks coming in from outside the province), they look for more diverse and different venues for their entertainment dollar.

Using your analogy, we should drop CFL franchises into New York, Houston and Chicago and guarantee ourselves at least 20K people in the stands just because they're "lots of them".

It's a fantastic time in Regina right now, the economy is chugging along, people are working making good buck, some of the folks that left are coming back, population in the cities there are still relatively low (200's) there's still a sense of close community that Calgary lost a long time ago.

The Riders are the unequivocal "Big Dog" in Sask and I don't see that changing in the near future.

I get what you guys are saying in terms of competition for the entertainment dollar. We certainly have very little of that in Regina. I still don't think that it would be unreasonable to think Calgary could get more season ticket holders. Perhaps 35,000 isn't attainable but I would think 30,000 isn't unrealistic.

Who knows, maybe I am off base but the Stamps have been one of the most successful franchises over the last 20 years, far more successful than the city's hockey club and season tickets cost less than $500 each. Pretty good value for 5-6 months of entertainment.

As for the topic at hand, I can't figure out why the Stamps don't push for a 1pm or 2pm kickoff. It won't eliminate rowdy fan behaviour completely but it will certainly curb the 8 hours of pre-drinking that some of these folks seem to think is the thing to do.

What you don't start drinking at 5 in the morning like the rest of us.

Why do you think the good lord invented Clamato juice, high in nutriants and vitamens and an excellent mix with any type of liquor or beer.

You folks have a pretty young following right now

It would be interesting to find out what percentage of native Sask folks(born and raised in Sask go to the university and go to the game Vs Calgary's university students.

First Post ... here it goes:

Teams have less and less say into schedules, that say has moved from teams to the network.

I'm not sure what makes you think 30,000 is 'reasonable'. It's just much more compeditive here for people's time and money. Don't underestimate the value of 'community' when looking at the popularity of a sports team. Being a Rider fan has much more to do about being proud of being from SK that what is obvious to most.

In the 80's the tide started to turn away from the Stamps here for a number of reasons, primarily because of the Flames but also competition from other things such as the NFL. Now that there is Sunday Ticket and you can get any game you want, most football fans in Calgary are NFL fans first, CFL fans second. You can't book a direct flight to seattle, denver, sf or Phx the friday before a home game or a monday after a home game from YYC without the expectation of paying full price.

And yes the team itself has been successful (less the F&F era) however the league in general has not. It's put a few decent years in a row now, but for the last couple decades it has basically been a mess. I mean it's as strong now as it has been in a long time, but even now we have an owner of two teams, which is the pinnicle of conflict of interest. You can't truely take a league holding a 'competition' seriously so long as you have a conflict of this magnitude. Refs here struggle with the speed of the game and the facilities CFL stadiums play in are decaying.

I think the successful reign of 2 of the last 3 owner groups have allowed the Stamps to get crowds that start with a '3', even if they don't have a building full of season ticket holders.

Welcome to the site, Darryl, even though I disagree with your sentiment regarding the NFL.

Meh, your going to find jagoffs both wearing stamps jerseys and rider jerseys. Best thing ever was Superman31 (and yes I told you I was going to post this) lecturing the wicked hot rider chick on having some self respect and not having to dress like a "slag whore" while negotiating 4 of her boyfriends 8 beers in exchange for giving him a break after spilling beer on Sup's hoodie. Atta boy, shooter...see you guys on Sat.

Out west, most football fans are CFL first. Many don't even watch the NFL or follow it. In the east, I think the trend is likely reversed.

Yes they live in Calgary and buy season tickets, hard to "police" that. Anecdotaly only: but I know several Rider fans who own Stamps season tickets. They attended every game (or most of them anyway) but get exceptionally pumped for Riders of course.

ZING!

Why do you have to be that guy? What happens in Section D, stays in Section D.

I cant deny that she wasnt good looking, annoying as holy hell, but it think my message got thru. I was more impressed with scoring the free beer. But, in all fairness I did tell that 18 year old douche that the only other thing that would be flying that night, would be him down the stairs

All in all, the Rider fans in our section and row were pretty good. See you and the crew on Saturday, Rebs....
