Why it's Great Being a Stamps Fan!
Hello Stamps Nation! I am a new poster to GSG - I finally decided to sign-up after passively reading comments here for the better part of a year.
I used to be an avid poster on the old Sportsnet site, and I've been a season ticket holder for 12 years. I despise the Riders and I like long walks on the beach
Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's great to be a Stamps fan:
1. We're tied for first place in the league (granted it's early, but it's better than being tied for "dead"...Edmonton, I'm looking at you).
2. We have 2 of the 4 players of the week this week.
3. We have the best stadium in the CFL - seriously, how can you not have fun at McMahon!
4. We have one of the league's best receivers (Rambo) set to return to the line-up.
5. We just humiliated the Priders!!
I thought I'd start my first post as a positive one! I know it's a long season, but there's lots to be excited about!
Cheers,
Jigga

Welcome aboard Jigga, but I'm not so sure about number 3. I like McMahon but let's be honest - the old girl could use a facelift, especially in the concourse area and some additional seating would be great.
As for currently "best stadium" I'd say Montreal. I know it only seats like 52 people, but that stadium, in that city, makes for a fantastic football experience / night out.
The dump in Regina has good atmosphere if you are a Prider fan, but once the game is over, you have to try and get back to your car through one of the worst areas of the murder capital of Canada. And then what? Some Pil at the back alley?
Toronto doesn't know or care about their team and while they have a great stadium, it would be weird to watch a game no one cared about in a stadium that seats 60,000 with only 12,000 people in it.
Hamilton would be fun, but that stadium is a dump too, and again - then what? Hamilton doesn't exactly strike me as a party town.
Winnipeg... 'nuff said.
Edmonton has a nice stadium and knowlegeable fans that attend. But... you'd have to watch the Eskies and this year that's vomit inducing.
BC's new (old) stadium appears to have some good atmosphere and a great view, so it could rival Montreal's experience... but I haven't been so the jury is still out. Too bad they intend to move back to the boring, mostly empty BC Place.

Hey Joe, wait till you see the new stadium for Winnipeg. It's 33,000 seats expandable to 40,000. Looked at the renderings & it will have a lower bowl that goes completely around the field like Empire Field does with two upper decks between the goal lines, larger concourse & wider, more comfortable theatre seating for all seats. No benches at all. There will be a roof covering 80% of the seating. Canad Inns is a dump but the new stadium will be sweet.

The question will it ever get built. My bet would be the riders stadium will be up before Winnipegs!

Bleeds Red - For Real!

McMahon is a wonderful place to watch football. There is very little space between the sidelines and the start of the bleachers. Doesn't make you feel like you're a mile away from the action, unlike stadiums such as Commonwealth (bronko, a nickname?).

Well, actually, the murder capital of Canada is Abbotsford, and has been for the last 2 years.

Funding in place & all approved. Don't let Nate tell you otherwise... The MB gov't backed this thing with a $90 million dollar loan... The Province wants it built as the alternative is to gut Canad Inns... well, there is no alternative.
Currently Winnipeg has a 7,500 seat baseball stadium that is 11 years old downtown at The Forks, a 15,000 seat arena built in 2007 & now a new stadium coming on line in 2 years. Hate to say it but the sports facilities in Calgary are going to fall behind other cities in Canada.
The Flames want a new building but I never hear the Stamps ownership doing the same. McMahon Stadium probably only has about 10 years of life left. Then it will become how much do governments pour into it for a refurb compared to building a new one?

Would the Hellard group consider retrofitting the current McMahon or building somewhere else? Would they need some tri-level government support or try to get it done by themselves?
These are the questions I would have asked Ted 'til he would had Hop Sing ram the steak sammich down my throat!!! lol

Not going to happens for at least a decade or more but the Hellard Group has money but I don't think the kind of money that is needed to build a new stadium. So the 3 levels of gov't would have to be involved. But our Premier is an Esks fan...

Ted should start the wheels in motion while he has a fan-friendly premier in place. These things don't materialize in a year or two and a new calgary facility would probably cost at least 300 million for a great uncovered facility - 400 mill. for covered.
Maybe Ted could pull off the idea Asper initially had which was to re-build Wpg. Stadium and add some office, apartment and retail towers to the project.
Asper couldn't pull it off and eventually needed a 95 million dollar loan to get another fire started at the U of M. (mostly govt. supported, Asper is the figurehead)
